Between the Grill and the Grandkids

by | May 24, 2026 | Lycan Legacy, Writing Life

Every Memorial Day finds me in the same place: at the grill, with grandkids underfoot. Somewhere between flipping burgers and chasing the little ones across the yard, I always take a moment to remember why we celebrate this day. It’s to honor the memory of those who served a higher purpose. I spent a large part of my life working and living with the military, and they have a special place in my heart. That experience helps me weave real-world details into my stories.

Writing werewolves doesn’t have much to do with any of that. But if you’ve read Paladin, you’ll remember the scene near the end where Luna faces down a nuclear submarine and an aircraft carrier, using magic and subterfuge to outmaneuver an errant admiral who tried to block her and her allies.

That scene is one of my favorites. It showcases Luna’s cleverness, and also her respect for human life. She takes the more dangerous course to avoid sinking the aircraft carrier and the loss of life that would have followed.

To everyone who served, and to the families who remember them: thank you.

May the moon light your path,
